Crystal Clear Water in your Swimming Pool

By Paul Good

I have finally cracked the art of getting (and keeping) my swimming pool water clear!
I would like to pass on my experience so that others can avoid the problems that I have had.
I have a Kafko 30' x 14' liner pool which is 5' deep in the centre.
The water volume is approx 50,000 litres.
I installed the pool in 2004.
When my pool water first became green, I was more than a little concerned. I tried the usual shock chlorine treatment which seemed to zap all of the nasties but the pool was still murky.
I then discovered the joy of flocculent!
Firstly fill up the pool to a couple of inches above the normal level.
Mix the flocculent with water as per the instructions, turn off the pump and circulation and pour into the pool, evenly distributing it. Do this last thing at night when no one will use the pool.
You should find that in the morning the flocculent has attached itself to all of the dead algae (previously killed by chlorine shocking) and is all laying on the bottom of the pool.
Put your sand filter to discharge which by passes the filter material and carefully suck up all of this debris layer and discharge straight to waste. You should now be left with a clear pool.
Add a good algicide to the pool and in the coming weeks continue with the chlorine as per instructions and all you should now need is the maintenance dose of Algicide and flocculent once a week for a nice looking pool!

Contributor's Note

After a lot of trial and error, I can now keep the swimming pool clear!

That looks like a nice indoor pool, not too many of them in England! I know even in the USA where there are thousands of pools, it's tough keeping a pool crystal clear, and each one seems to have it's own characteristics.

Nice article, hope the pool is also heated so you can use it during the winter. I assume that with the roof over it that it is.

Hi Poddys,
sorry for the delay in replying. Qondio stuff has been landing in the spam pool! The roof is primarily there to preserve the heat during the night time. The pool is heated by solar only. We can usually swim from mid April until mid October. The babydome cover has snow on it and the water temp is currently 4 degrees c!
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the reply Paul. It still sounds rather good, and being solar heated it doesn't cost which is good.

Shame you can only use it during the summer months, unless you have a hot tub and use it as a plunge pool. Still 4C is rather chilly unless you are really brave!
