eBay selling tips and musings

I would like to pass on some eBay selling and buying tips which I have gleaned over the last 6 years or so. I mostly sell on eBay so most of the tips will be for that! If you are selling in more than one category, it might be helpful to have a selling ID for each one. i.e One for porclain and china, one for garden products and so forth. I also have separate paypal and bank accounts linked to each eBay account. In total, I have 4 eBay ids, 3 paypal accounts and 3 bank accounts! I also purchase the odd item and 4th eBay account is for this. I have found that it is best to list items for 10 days, starting on a Friday evening around 8:30pm. This means that your item will be exposed to bidders for two weekends and will finish on Monday evening when folks have eaten their dinner and are sitting down to check their ebay bids! This is what works best for me. Some sellers have their listings end on a Sunday evening. I find this far too busy with the whole world and their uncle on the internet. Another tip is to start the auction at 99p/c if you know that the item is hot and popular. This will attract more bidders who can be put off by a high starting price. Always check to see what else is on eBay in the way of competition and pinch the best looking ideas (do not copy pictures or text though!). Check 'completed listings' which you will find on the left hand side navigation, near the bottom and you will get an idea of how much the items finish up at. If you are listing items in a shop for example then keep the number of items to 5 maximum. In this way, buyers know that they should purchase now before the goods are all sold. If you list 10+ items, then there will be less urgency for them to hit the 'buy now' button. last but not least, take lots of good quality pictures. You should use the 1.2mega pixel setting on your camera and use bright natural light. I take my pictures in the conservatory! eBay will charge your for using multiple pictures so I use photobucket for a couple of sites and auctiva for my main one selling the caravan parts. Auctiva cost 9.95$ a month but it is worth the money if you have 50+ items in the shop. When you take the photo, take 4 or 5 from the same position. In this way you can choose the best focused picture and discard the rest. If I am listing a teapot for example I will use 9 or 10 photos, so that the bidder can see the teapot from all angles. A good close up of the underside (the backstamp) is also crucial. I know you old hands will have read all this before but I hope it is of some use to someone starting out. My biggest tip is to use the 'help' buttons and the eBay 'community forum'. You should be able to solve any queries this way without paying some 'guru'.

This is good information. Another approach is to sell in just one category and build a reputation in that area. My wife sells used books on ebay and she usually sells them in sets of like books. One good marketing technique is to offer free shipping if someone buys several sets totaling over a certain amount.
