Palme Hotel Garda Review
By Paul Good
Well, first off let me say that Lake Garda and the surrounding towns where beautiful. All the grapes and kiwi fruits were almost ready for harvest. The lake itself is very pretty. Now for the Hotel Palme. We were on a package tour with First Choice. This was the last tour of the season for first Choice with this hotel. No complaints with First Choice or the rep Sam. Boy you could tell that the season was winding down with some of the staff. A severe lack of interest from most of them which was a shame for the 10% who were happy and glad to see paying customers. The Manager (I suspect he was also the boss) could not give a monkeys when we complained to him early one evening. The evening in question (I think it was Sunday 30th Sept) saw all of the tables in the main bar area reserved for a large German party called 'Graf'. We were told that we could not sit in there as they had paid for the room and the entertainment. Well excuse me, we had paid for the holiday. We had to sit in the lobby with our drinks. Anyway, it gave us a reason to find another hotel in which to sit and enjoy our drinks. I cannot remember the name of it but if you exit the main entrance of the Palme, turn left and cross over the road, walk about 50 metres there is a delightful little Hotel which is very pleasant with cheerful staff and the drinks are cheaper too! The rooms were ok with a nice comfortable king size bed. The decor was tired, dated and 1970's but functional. The walls are paper thin or the sound insulation is very poor as we could clearly hear sound from all the other rooms (use your imagination). The room safe was in the wardrobe and you did not have to pay extra for it which was a pleasant surprise. Whilst we did not go on holiday to watch the TV it would have been nice to have had at least one English channel if only for the news. Plenty of German channels which was not surprising as I estimate that 95% of the guests were German. The food was not good. Poor choice and uninspiring. The only foods that they could get right were the pasta dishes. I even saw one of the staff sigh and roll their eyes when politely asked for some more tea bags. So, if you are looking for a holiday which will leave a lasting impression with lots of talking points, go the the Palme hotel. If you are looking for happy smiling staff, good food with modern facilities then avoid this Italian version of Faulty Towers like the plague.
