What I find when the tide goes out

By Paul Good

I love to poke around the rockpools where I live when the tide is out.
I live in Harwich, Essex, England by the way.
The rise and fall of the tide here is approximately 4 metres and when the tide is out there are lots of things to see.
I have been playing on the beach (yeah, still a kid at heart) for about 50 years now and the sea life has changed quite a bit.
For example, when I was young there were whelks and cockles to be found everywhere but now they have all but gone. Coincidentally (I think I spelt that right) the sewage treatment has also improved over the years now and we have been awarded a Blue Flag for water quality! Maybe the Whelks liked the pooh!
I think the demise of the cockles were due to people gathering and eating them. One creature that is now in abundance is the oyster. When I was a boy, there were none to be seen. Now they are everywhere to be found. Not the native oyster but the pacific variety ( I think). They love it here.
I have tried to eat the odd one or two but they do not like me very much. I believe the oyster fishery near here at Mersea, keeps the harvested oysters in tanks for a few days first. They circulate the water and use ultra violet filters to zap any possible lurgies. I have attached some photos of for you to see.
Please let me know if you would like more waffle about life at low water!
